Sadness, joy of making paper fans
(Baonghean.vn) - For hundreds of years, the craft of making handmade paper fans has been associated with the people of Lang Nam from generation to generation. Currently, although the demand for paper fans is not much anymore, some households still stick with the craft, both increasing their income and preserving the traditional craft for their descendants.
Stick with the profession
In the scorching heat of a summer day in June, we went to Nghi Trung commune (Nghi Loc) to ask about the paper fan making profession. Chairman of Nghi Trung commune Farmers' Association Pham Van Hien happily said that the paper fan making profession is currently mainly concentrated in hamlet 10 of the parish of Lang Nam. The family of Mr. Le Van Trung (70 years old) is one of the households with many generations of experience in making paper fans. When we visited, Mr. Trung was sitting in the middle of the yard meticulously cutting each bundle of paper into arcs and stacking them around, while his wife - Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thu, 70 years old, sat spreading glue (water from cassava bark) on the fans that had been formed. Around the small yard in front of the house, there were many fan ribs that had been split, thin, and shaved smooth and silky.
