Office workers, who have to sit 6-8 hours a day, are at the highest risk of getting hemorrhoids and having to have surgery for this disease.

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy - Head of General Surgery Department, People's Hospital 115 said that hemorrhoids always exist in the anal canal, including: External hemorrhoids located in the subcutaneous area of the anal canal covered by the skin and internal hemorrhoids located in the submucosal area of the anal canal above the dentate line.

Sitting a lot and eating spicy foods often makes office workers susceptible to hemorrhoids.

The cause of hemorrhoids is currently unclear. Hemorrhoids are very common, especially in the elderly. Statistics abroad show that the rate of hemorrhoids in people over 50 years old is 50%.

Hemorrhoids are common in people who stand a lot, sit a lot, walk little, have chronic constipation, dysentery syndrome, causes of increased abdominal pressure (chronic bronchitis causing a lot of coughing, heart failure, cirrhosis...), pelvic floor prolapse, tumors in the anorectal area are also causes of hemorrhoids.

Office workers, who have to sit for 6-8 hours a day, are at high risk of developing hemorrhoids. In fact, the number of office workers with hemorrhoids requiring surgery is the highest.

Symptom

Common symptoms include discomfort, pain, and sometimes bleeding during bowel movements. Prolapsed hemorrhoids (hemorrhoids that protrude from the anus) cause mucus discharge and itching around the anus. If the prolapsed hemorrhoids become blocked and the hemorrhoid mass becomes congested, it causes severe pain.

Bleeding is the earliest and most common symptom of hemorrhoids. At first, the bleeding is very discreet, a few very small streaks of blood stick to the solid stool, bleeding only occurs when constipated, when defecating, you have to strain. Later, bleeding becomes more frequent and the amount of blood increases.

When hemorrhoids are large or the anal sphincter tone is weak, hemorrhoids will prolapse, depending on the degree of prolapse to divide the severity.

Hemorrhoids are usually painless, but when there are complications such as thrombosis, prolapse, or injury causing anal fissures, they cause pain.

To diagnose hemorrhoids, in addition to the above signs, colonoscopy is required to help determine the diagnosis and rule out colorectal tumors.

Regular exercise is one way to prevent hemorrhoids.

Prevent

Several lifestyle changes can help prevent hemorrhoids from developing:

- Constipation is a common cause of hemorrhoids, so you need to eat lots of fruits and vegetables to get more fiber (to help bowel movements stronger)...

- Drink plenty of water every day. Avoid alcohol as it can make stools dry and small.

- Regular physical activity is also necessary and beneficial for digestion.

- Quit smoking, actively treat respiratory diseases immediately, because it will cause frequent coughing, increasing pressure in the abdomen.

- Avoid bad habits such as: reading newspapers or playing computer games while going to the toilet, using stimulants such as coffee, pepper, chili...
