Warning from 15 tragic drowning cases in 2017

(Baonghean.vn) - Since the beginning of 2017, there have been many tragic drowning incidents across the country, taking the lives of many students, shocking and worrying the whole society.

In Quang Ninh:At around 3:00 p.m. on July 29, five students went to the Ha Coi River area, passing Nguyen Du Street (Quang Ha Town, Hai Ha District, Quang Ninh Province) to swim. After swimming for 20 minutes, three children drowned. Seeing this, the remaining two swam to shore and called for help.

Upon receiving the news, some local people and authorities went to the accident site to search. However, when brought to shore, all three children were dead.

In Thanh Hoa:A tragic drowning incident occurred on the afternoon of July 14 in Luan Khe commune, Thuong Xuan district (Thanh Hoa). According to initial information, Mr. Luong Van Quan, in Luan Khe commune, Thuong Xuan district, Thanh Hoa, left his two children, Luong Gia Nhan (5 years old) and Luong Gia Nghia (4 years old) at home and went to work in the fields.

In the afternoon of the same day, Mr. Quan returned home but could not find his children. Immediately, Mr. Quan called everyone to look for them and discovered that the two children had died in the family's water tank.

In Hanoi:On the afternoon of July 2, in So Ha village (Ninh So commune, Thuong Tin, Hanoi), a tragic drowning incident occurred, causing 4 deaths. According to initial information, at that time, 3 male students invited each other to go swimming in a pond near their house. A moment later, local people discovered that all 3 had drowned and called for everyone to come down to rescue them.

Two young men jumped into the pond to rescue the victims. However, two of the three boys died due to suffocation for too long. Unfortunately, the two young men, while rescuing the victims, dove into the foundation of the house that jutted out into the pond and could not get out in time, so they also suffocated and died later.

In Ha Tinh:On the evening of June 25, in Viet Xuyen commune, Thach Ha district, Ha Tinh province, a tragic drowning incident occurred, killing two cousins. The heartbreaking incident occurred when two cousins, both 12 years old, were herding buffaloes across the Cau Song river in Trung Trinh village and unfortunately drowned, leading to their deaths.

Earlier, in the afternoon of the same day, another drowning incident occurred at Rao An stream, Son Kim 1 commune, Huong Son district, Ha Tinh province. The victim was a 17-year-old student who slipped and was drowned while bathing in the stream.

In Khanh Hoa:On May 4, a drowning incident occurred in the sea of ​​Van Tho commune, Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province, causing the death of 4 female students of grade 7 at Nguyen Hue Secondary School (Van Phuoc commune, Van Ninh district).

Accordingly, at around 10am on May 4, the female students went to Bai Dai beach, Van Tho commune (Van Ninh district) to swim. While swimming, all four female students were swept away by a strong whirlpool, leading to their deaths.

In Phu Yen:On May 24, four students from Cung Son Middle School in Phu Yen province went swimming in the river at the same time as the Ba Ha hydropower plant was running two generators, so they were swept away by the water.

In Hai Phong:At 4:00 p.m. on May 4, a serious drowning incident occurred in the Lach Tray River area, near the construction site of Niem 2 Bridge in Dong Hoa Ward, Kien An District, Hai Phong City.

At that time, 8 students from Dong Hoa Secondary School went swimming in the river. Among them were 2 students (14 years old) in class 8C4. Because they did not know how to swim, both drowned and died.

In Thai Nguyen:On the afternoon of May 2, a group of students went to the Cau River area in Nha Long commune to play and take pictures. Because they did not know how to swim, some of the students were swept away by the water. Upon discovering the incident, local residents came to the rescue and brought many of the students to shore. However, 3 students drowned. The 3 students who died were in grade 12, including one boy and two girls.

In Da Nang:At around 11:50 a.m. on March 26, a group of three students from Nguyen Trai Secondary School (Ai Nghia town, Dai Loc district, Quang Nam province) invited each other to go to Da Nang to play and went to Xuan Thieu beach, Lien Chieu district to swim.

Due to the big waves, all three students were swept away and drowned at sea. Coast Guard immediately responded to the rescue but all of them died.

In Gia Lai:At around 2:00 p.m. on March 29, a group of five sixth-grade students from Chu Van An Secondary School (Ia O Commune, Ia Grai District) went swimming in the river. During the swimming process, four of them drowned, resulting in their deaths.

A nearby resident ran to the lake, dived down, pulled a child to shore and tried to save him, but the child had died because he had been drowning for quite some time.

In Binh Dinh:On the afternoon of March 18, Vo Xan Secondary School (Tay Son District) organized a camping trip for its students to celebrate the founding anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. After that, a group of 8th graders from the school (including 5 students) went to Kien My Bridge to swim in the Kon River and drowned. They were rescued by local people, but one student later died.

InAn Giang:At around 3:30 p.m. on January 1, local residents passing by the construction site of Provincial Road 944 in An Thuan Hamlet, Hoa Binh Commune, about 500 meters from An Hoa Ferry, connecting Long Xuyen City with Cho Moi District, discovered the body of a 12-year-old boy floating on the water, so they retrieved him and brought him to shore.

Observing on the shore nearby, they saw 2 pairs of sandals and 2 sets of clothes, so everyone informed the local authorities and the family to continue searching. At noon on January 2, the body of another 13-year-old boy was also found nearby. Both were from Hoa Binh commune.

In Nghe An:On the morning of April 2, three children living in Xuan Son commune herded cows to the Bau Han dam area to graze. Seeing a waterfowl, two children chased after it to catch it. Unfortunately, they fell into deep water and drowned.

Hearing the cries for help, some nearby residents ran to help. However, due to the depth of the water, they could not save the children. It was not until around 9:30 a.m. the same day that the bodies of the two children were found.

In Lam Dong:At around 2:00 p.m. on February 18, at the irrigation lake in Hamlet 1, Loc Phu Commune, Bao Lam District (Lam Dong), 3 children living in Hamlet 1, Loc Phu Commune, Bao Lam) invited each other to go to the irrigation lake to play. When 2 children rowed the boat about 10 meters away from the shore, the boat capsized, causing 2 children to fall into the lake and die.

InHo Chi Minh City:On the morning of March 29, an 11-year-old boy from Lam Dong and four other children went swimming in the Saigon River, below the old Binh Loi Bridge (Hiep Binh Chanh Ward, Thu Duc District). While the group was swimming in the river, the 11-year-old boy was suddenly swept away by the water, and the other children were screaming in panic.

On the morning of March 30, the 11-year-old boy was found about 500 meters from the scene (Hiep Binh Chanh ward, Thu Duc district) downstream of the Saigon River.

Statistics show that each year, about 7,000 children die from injuries. On average, each year in the period 2010 - 2015, about 2,800 children died from drowning. The age group with the highest mortality rate is from 5 to 14 years old. The death rate due to drowning in children accounts for more than 50% of deaths due to injuries. Death due to drowning in Vietnam is the highest in the region, 8 times higher than in developed countries.

On February 5, 2016, the Prime Minister approved the Child Injury Prevention Program for the period 2016 - 2020. Accordingly, the goal is to reduce the child mortality rate due to drowning to below 6% compared to 2015 (about 170 people). 40% of primary and secondary school-age children know safety skills in the water environment; 90% of children use lifebuoys when participating in waterway traffic; 100% of provinces and centrally-run cities pilot the safe swimming program./.
