According to the full vote count posted online today, more than two million out of nearly 2.3 million people who participated in the referendum supported independence for the Catalonia region, AFP reported.
The preliminary results also showed that 90% of the votes counted were in favor of separating from Spain. However, the Spanish Constitutional Court and the Madrid government opposed the referendum, saying it was against the 1978 constitution.
According to experts, the referendum result could plunge Spain into one of its worst political crises since 1975. A series of clashes have broken out between Spanish police and voters.
