The incident occurred in the 63rd minute, when South Korea led 2-0 at home against Colombia thanks to a brace from Son Heung-min. During an argument between the players, Cardona raised his hands to his eyes, implying a “squint” image aimed at captain Ki Sung-yeung. The 24-year-old striker’s actions were condemned and criticized by fans, as they were classified as racist behavior.
After the match, Cardona had to make his Instagram account private after Korean fans hacked into his account and posted insults in Korean. The referee ignored the behavior, but FIFA could impose a heavy penalty on the Boca Juniors striker.
The collision started when James Rodriguez kicked defender Kim Jin-su. The Bayern Munich midfielder thought Kim was playing dirty and was wasting time, so he went to pick his opponent up. The Korean player responded by waving his hand in front of James' face. Although he missed, the Colombian "conductor" still cried out, covered his face and fell to the ground.
Colombia only managed to score one goal thanks to centre-back Duvan Zapata, accepting a 1-2 defeat. The tension and stakes of the match surprised fans as it was only a friendly.
