Octopus tomato plant produces 32,000 fruits per harvest

The Heirloom Tomato plant, also known as the octopus tomato plant, has a canopy of about 40 - 50 m2 and yields tens of thousands of fruits per harvest.

According to Oddity Central, Heirloom Tomato is a hybrid plant that grows from a single stem and spreads across a trellis.

Yong Huang, manager of agricultural science at Epcot, part of the Walt Disney World Resort, found the special tomato plant in Beijing, China. Realizing its potential as a tourist attraction, Huang brought the seeds back and planted them in several pots in the park.

Heirloom Tomatoes take 1.2 - 1.5 years to fully develop. They do not produce fruit for the first 7 - 8 months. But when mature, each harvest can produce an average of more than 14,000 fruits.

The Guinness World Records records the largest harvest of fruit achieved by one of two octopus tomato plants on display at Epcot as 32,000 with a total weight of 522 kg.

Ripe tomatoes from the Octopus Tomato plant grown at Epcot are harvested regularly and used in several Walt Disney World restaurants.
