Old farmer Le Van Dung (born in 1954), Cong 2 hamlet, Quy Hau commune, Tan Lac district, is the owner of the largest green-skin pomelo farm in Hoa Binh.
With 1,200 grapefruit trees and 800 orange trees bearing fruit in the first year, Mr. Dung estimates that by the end of this year, he will have recovered almost all of the approximately 3 billion VND his family invested in the past 3 years.
Mr. Dung is a retired military officer from Thanh Tri, Hanoi. After being demobilized, he moved his family to Tan Lac, Hoa Binh, and invested in buying nearly 5 hectares of hilly land to build a farm.
In 2013, Mr. Dung invested in buying more than 1,000 green-skinned grapefruit trees from Ben Tre and 800 mandarin orange trees to grow on a large scale. Learning from experience in care, putting in a lot of sweat and effort,... this year, his family has reaped sweet fruits.
Mr. Dung's green-skinned grapefruit tree is full of fruit, about 100 fruits, the average weight is about 2kg/fruit, some grapefruits are oversized and weigh up to 4-5kg.
Grapefruit is a shade tree. To keep the grapefruit branches from falling on the ground because of the heavy fruit, Mr. Dung had to use poles to build a fence around the base of the grapefruit tree so that it would have something to lean on. Some branches bore dozens of fruits. The grapefruits were plump and drooped on the ground.
With 800 orange trees in full bloom, Mr. Dung also erected poles as support posts and tied ropes to each branch to help the trees maintain their weight due to the heavy fruit load.
According to Mr. Dung's estimate, 1,200 grapefruit trees will yield more than 100 tons, with a garden price of 27,000 VND/kg, he will "pocket" about 3 billion VND.

Garden owners in Hoa Binh said that Mr. Le Van Dung's grapefruit garden is the most beautiful in Tan Lac. The trees are at full maturity, the leaves are green and disease-free, and they produce beautiful and delicious grapefruits at the beginning of the season. With a harvest of more than 100 tons, the garden price is 27,000 VND/kg, he will "pocket" about 3 billion VND.
"This grapefruit garden is the result of my life's work, from researching and researching fertilizers that ensure adequate nutrients and clean, standard fruit. If irradiated for testing, my grapefruits would still meet the standards for export abroad," Mr. Dung proudly said.
Mr. Dung said that, according to his experience, in the following years, each grapefruit tree will yield 1.5-2 times more than the first year of bearing fruit. Becoming a "billionaire farmer" is within his reach.
