On the morning of May 10, the Politburo announced the decision to assign Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, to be Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan is a member of the Party Central Committee, 10th, 11th, 12th terms; a National Assembly delegate, 10th, 12th, 13th terms; Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, 7th term; a member of the Politburo, 11th, 12th terms.

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan was born on June 12, 1953 in Ca Mau, but his hometown is in Phuong Tra, Chau Thanh district, Tra Vinh province.

From June 1970 to December 1979, Mr. Nhan joined the army, then went to university and did research at the Magdeburg University of Technology - German Democratic Republic (1972-1979).

1/1980-3/1983, he worked at the Military Technical Institute - Ministry of National Defense, First Lieutenant. 4/1983-4/1985, was a lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology.

4/1985-7/1988: Member of the Standing Committee of the City Youth Union, Head of the Science and Technology Department, Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union.

8/1988-10/1990: Education Attaché, Embassy of Vietnam in the German Democratic Republic; Party Committee member of the Embassy Party Committee.

11/1990-10/1991: Studied market economics at Magdeburg University of Technology - Federal Republic of Germany.

11/1991-8/1995: Deputy Head of Industrial Management Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, then studied for a master's degree in community management at Oregon University (USA) and a training course for investment project appraisal experts at Harvard University (USA).

9/1995-4/1997: Head of Department then Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. Associate Professor of Economics (1996).

5/1997-12/1999: Member of the City Party Committee, Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City; Delegate of the 10th National Assembly.

12/1999-5/2001: Member of the City Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee. 5/2001-6/2006: Member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee; Member of the National Council for Science and Technology Policy. At the 10th National Congress of the Party, he was elected to the Party Central Committee. Professor of Economics (2002).

2006: Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Party Committee, Minister of Education and Training, Delegate of the 12th National Assembly.

2007: Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of the Party Committee, Minister of Education and Training.

2010: Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister. At the 11th National Congress of the Party, he was elected to the Party Central Committee and a delegate to the 13th National Assembly. At the 1st Session of the 13th National Assembly, he was approved by the National Assembly to continue as Deputy Prime Minister.

2013: Elected to the Politburo at the 7th Conference of the Central Executive Committee (11th tenure). At the 6th Conference of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, elected to hold the position of Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, 7th tenure.

In January 2016, at the 12th National Congress of the Party, he was elected to the Party Central Committee and elected by the Central Committee to the Politburo.

On May 10, 2017, he was assigned by the Politburo to hold the position of Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.
