Psychologists are concerned that when the teenagers are rescued after two weeks trapped, they may suffer from post-traumatic stress and sleep disorders.

Four members of the Wild Boars soccer team were rescued from the Tham Luang cave on July 8. Medical and psychological experts began to care for them, while Thai authorities began the second rescue operation on the afternoon of July 9. Doctors said that the victims trapped in the cave for the past two weeks will have to deal with a series of psychological problems.

In fact, being stuck in a confined space for days can easily lead to fear, confusion, anxiety, and despair for victims. In children, the effects of these negative emotions are especially strong. "Adults think more rationally, telling themselves they will be saved. Children don't," said Sandy Capaldi, a psychologist and associate director of the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at the University of Pennsylvania.CNN.

Despite the differences in how they react, the psychological consequences for children and adults are quite similar. After the accident, the 12 boys and their coach are said to be prone to nightmares, sleep disorders, hypervigilance, and difficulty concentrating; thereby increasing the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder.

"The brain stores memories of dangerous situations that make people afraid and want to run away every time they are exposed to darkness, cold and confined spaces. For example, when entering an elevator," said Dr. Peter Lin, a health contributor to the newspaper.CBC Newsexplain

Post-traumatic stress disorder is what the 33 Chilean miners suffered in 2010 after being trapped in a cave for two months. Five years on, tests show that their psychological problems have not disappeared. In the case of the Thai youth soccer team and their coach, the mental recovery period will certainly be longer because they have less exposure to confined spaces than the miners. In addition, post-traumatic stress in children can lead to mood disorders, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance use.
