The “Green Voice” Debate Competition attracted the participation of more than 2,000 individuals and teams nationwide. Overcoming many intense rounds, students Ha Thi Hien Anh (grade 12 D2) and Hoang Tra My - grade 10D7 - Huynh Thuc Khang High School won First Prize (in the Vietnamese category) and Pham Quynh Anh - grade 11C7 - Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted won First Prize (in the English category).

With this achievement, all three also won a prize of more than 3.3 billion VND from Vingroup, including a full scholarship for the bachelor's program (applicable to all majors) at VinUni University.

Using AI technology to protect the environment

After the final victory, Ha Thi Hien Anh and Hoang Tra My returned to their normal school schedule at Huynh Thuc Khang High School.

However, the echoes of the competition are still intact: "When the judges read the results, I did not believe that I won. I turned back and asked Hien Anh, is it us, is it us? This is truly an unexpected result, because in reality, when we came to this competition, we determined that we only wanted to learn" - Hoang Tra My recounted.

The "Green Voice" Debate Competition is part of the Green Education program and is part of the Cooperation Agreement betweenMinistry of Education and Trainingand Green Future Foundation (Vingroup Corporation). The contest is organized with the mission of raising public awareness and encouraging action for a sustainable environment.

Coming to this competition, right from the preliminary round, Hien Anh and Tra My's project received the attention of the judges as well as the online community. The project is called Global Smart Trash Bin System integrating AI to identify, classify trash and apply practical education, aiming to develop environmental awareness and connect the global green education network to realize the goal of "turning trash into resources", contributing to building a green, clean and sustainable future.

The idea for the project came from the environment in which the children live, when they "saw that trash bins often contained a lot of smelly trash and unsorted plastic waste, causing pollution. Meanwhile, from January 1, 2025, the Government has stipulated that waste must be classified" - Hien Anh said.

Hien Anh and Tra My's smart trash cans combine artificial intelligence (AI), the trash can system can automatically identify and classify trash, and connect data to global platforms to share information and optimize waste treatment. This project not only aims to raise awareness of trash classification in the student community, but also aims to create a technology ecosystem that supports environmental education.

In addition, in the 10 key action programs of the Green Future Fund, including: Green Mobility, Green Energy, Green Office, Green Consumption, Green Lifestyle, Green Urban Area, Green Tourism, Green Education, Green Healthcare and Green Sports, both chose the field of green education because it will directly impact students' awareness, bringing long-term sustainable values.

During the implementation process, from the idea to the project implementation, Tra My and Hien Anh had to conduct field surveys and update a lot of news about the new regulations of the Government. In addition, from creating clips for the contest, practicing debates and public speaking, they had to practice many times.

The luckiest thing during the process was that Tra My and Hien Anh had known each other since childhood, had been active at the City Children's Cultural House, studied debate with the same teacher, participated in many competitions together and studied at Huynh Thuc Khang High School, so they cooperated quite well.

Award Collection

The “Green Voice” Debate Competition is not the first competition that Tra My and Hien Anh have participated in. Before that, since their primary and secondary school days, the two female students of Huynh School had a collection of many different awards.

Tra My won the runner-up prize for child MC at the 2017 Superstar Talent Kids; Second Prize in the 2020 Vietnam Children - Reaching Out to the World Contest; First and Second Prizes in the National Young Historian Contest in 2020, 2021...

I also represented Nghe An students to participate in the First Children's National Assembly Delegation Program in 2023, the 4th National Excellent Team Leader Festival in 2023, the 3-country Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia Children's Festival in 2022, the 7th National Children's Forum in 2023, the 2020 National Uncle Ho's Good Children Delegate...

With Hien Anh, she and Tra My also won the second prize in the national Reading for the Future Contest. She also won the first prize in the Nghe An Reading Culture Ambassador Contest in 2023. In addition, she is also an artist, having won many high prizes in cultural and artistic competitions of the city and the province.

With experience in many competitions and familiarity with the stage, it was not too difficult for Hien Anh and Tra My to easily pass the first rounds of the competition. However, from the time they entered the competition round to select the best teams to enter the quarter-finals, semi-finals and become the last teams to enter the final round was not easy. According to Tra My, the exciting thing in this competition is not only coming up with ideas and building projects, but the important thing is that the participants must prove the usefulness and feasibility of the project. Besides, they must be ready to answer difficult questions from the judges.

The elimination of each team after each round was also a big challenge. After 5 months of intense competition with confidence and courage, Hien Anh and Tra My had an "explosive" final match when they convincingly won against the team from Luong Van Chanh High School (Phu Yen province).

We have been following this competition since season 1 and are very impressed with the teams because they are all very good in terms of ideas, content and debating ability. In addition to our own efforts and a little luck, I would also like to thank my teachers and family for always accompanying, supporting and enthusiastically cheering us on to successfully reach the finish line.

Phan School female student and first prize with green tourism project

Also at this year's competition, student Pham Quynh Anh - class 11C7 -Phan Boi Chau High School for the Giftedalong with his companion Tu Minh Anh - (grade 10, Greenfield School, Hung Yen), excellently won the first prize in the English category with the Eco-Token project based on blockchain, aiming to encourage green tourism and reduce pollution. The project allows tourists to accumulate tokens through activities such as planting trees, reducing waste, in exchange for incentives in eco-tourism.

Before coming to this contest, Quynh Anh and Minh Anh met each other through a non-profit project called Green Aura - a project with Workshop activities. Instructing people to use recycled fabrics to make meaningful handmade products, raising funds to support orphans at SOS Children's Village Hanoi.

With a passion for environmental protection activities, after learning about the “Green Voice” Debate Contest, Quynh Anh was the one who came up with the idea and received support from her younger brother from Hung Yen.

According to Quynh Anh, the most difficult part of the implementation process was the large geographical distance and time difference. Therefore, the idea generation, planning, and debate practice all had to be done late at night, sometimes even staying up until 2 or 3 am.

During the preparation time for this exam, Minh Anh was also participating in another speech contest and Quynh Anh was focusing on the Japanese Drama contest organized by the Japanese Language Learning Organization and the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam, so their study and exam schedules were very "tense", seemingly with no time to rest.

Sharing more about this contest, Quynh Anh also said that she chose to compete in English because her project had many foreign terms, and using English would help convey the full meaning of the project. Quynh Anh herself, when she was a student at Nguyen Trai Secondary School (Tan Ky), won third prize in the Provincial Excellent Student Competition and was a student in the English-Japanese specialized class, so she did not encounter many difficulties in speaking. She was only surprised because the remaining opponents were very strong and her team had to try and make every effort to win the final victory.
