On March 24, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni submitted the government's resignation to President Sergio Mattarella after the country's lawmakers elected the presidents of the Senate and the House of Representatives earlier that day.

A statement from the Italian Presidential Palace said President Mattarella accepted the resignation of the Gentiloni government, but asked the government to continue fulfilling its duties in a caretaker capacity while waiting for a new government to be formed.

Meanwhile, on Twitter, Prime Minister Gentiloni wrote that his government had resigned and was now only dealing with “current affairs.”

On March 28, President Mattarella is expected to begin consultations with the leaders of the main political parties on forming a new government in Italy. If this process fails, the President could choose a short-term solution of forming a transitional government with the support of all parties and then Italy must hold a new general election by the end of this year or early 2009.

In the general election in Italy on March 4, no political party or coalition won the majority of votes needed to form a government on its own./.
