National Assembly Chairman attends the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons
On the morning of September 28, at the Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Cultural Palace, the ceremony to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons on October 1st took place, launching the month of action for the elderly in Vietnam.
Attending the ceremony were National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan; Politburo member, Head of the Central Mass Mobilization Commission Truong Thi Mai; Politburo member, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai and Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam along with representatives of many elderly people.

The Association of the Elderly was formerly the Association of Elderly National Salvation, initiated and established by President Ho Chi Minh. The Association has played a very important role in the history of national defense and construction. In the cause of renovation, the elderly in all regions of the country have devoted all their enthusiasm, intelligence and experience, playing an indispensable role in the cause of national construction and protection.
Promoting the nation's tradition, over the past time, our Party and State have paid great attention and devoted many resources to caring for the elderly, so that the elderly are honored; at the same time, promoting the prestige, intellectual experience of the elderly for the cause of developing and protecting the Fatherland.
Therefore, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam affirmed that from the Constitution to the Law on the Elderly and guiding documents are increasingly being improved to serve the care and development of the elderly. The Government has a national action program for the elderly and October of each year has become the month of action for the elderly.
After 22 years of development with nearly 9 million members, accounting for over 90% of the total number of elderly people in the country. The Association of the Elderly has always coordinated well with state agencies and organizations participating in the development of laws and regimes, especially issues related to care, rights and interests as well as promoting the role of the elderly and mobilizing the whole society to properly implement the Party's guidelines and the State's laws.
Movements such as “Eliminate dilapidated houses for the elderly”, “1 million warm clothes for the poor elderly”, “Bright eyes for the elderly”… have connected the arms of compassion, sharing, and helping hundreds of thousands of elderly people nationwide. These movements have encouraged the elderly to actively participate in production, economic development, and Party and government building, contributing to political stability and being a shining example for their children and grandchildren to follow.
On behalf of the Government, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam acknowledged the achievements of the Association of the Elderly in recent times, and emphasized that in the coming time, work for the elderly needs to receive more attention.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam suggested that, first of all, it is necessary to continue to effectively implement social security policies for the elderly, gradually expanding the scope in accordance with economic development conditions, and at the same time further expanding the types of public services for the elderly to create increasingly better conditions for the elderly to access services. It is necessary to prioritize further investment in geriatrics in all medical facilities. Encourage the development of types of services, providing types of cultural and entertainment activities for the elderly.
The Deputy Prime Minister also said that it is necessary to strongly promote the role of the elderly in Party and government building and consider promoting the elderly as an effective solution for elderly care; consider population aging not only a challenge but also a driving force and condition for developing a prosperous and humane society./.
