Miss Vietnam 2018 Northern Final: Ao yem and bikini performance in Cua Lo
After three years of being associated with Miss Vietnam, director Hoang Nhat Nam is still full of ideas for shows that promise to be eye-catching and spectacular. Coming up next is the Northern finale - taking place at Binh Minh Square, Cua Lo on July 22.
After many times of making the final rounds for Miss Vietnam, the director hasfeeling a little out of ideasyet?
From now until the final, there will be many shows and competition nights. Nam has already planned a script for the whole thing, but it has not been released according to the media roadmap. With the mindset of the general director and directly giving ideas for the accompanying activities as well as the shows and competition nights, I myself do not feel pressured or lack of ideas. That will be shown in the upcoming activities, such as the Northern final night, the 30th Anniversary Gala of Miss Vietnam, especially the Sea Beauty night as well as the final night.

The stage design of the Northern Final Night was inspired by Cai That (a very popular fishing tool, familiar to people in the Northern Delta). |
How will the director convey the spirit of Northern culture in the upcoming final night?
The Southern final night was quite successful with the themeSmell. Northern final night, I chose the themeWoodfor symmetry. This is a very good word, with many connotations. When mentioning "wooden", people often think of something simple and rustic. But Nam thinks it does not stop there but also contains traditional cultural values of the North. The performance is still a familiar format but will be softened by the guiding theme. Working in Nghe An, I also included hat vi dam - a heritage recognized by UNESCO.
"Forcing" contestants from all over to practice singing Vi Dam, is that too challenging?
Studying is only to give you a certain amount of knowledge, but singing well is another story. In previous rounds, contestants have also experienced Bac Ninh Quan Ho and Don Ca Tai Tu. This year is also an opportunity for me to contribute to promoting more of the nation's heritage.

Why did you choose the image of That for the Northern final stage graphics?
The “That” is a very popular fishing tool, familiar to the people of the Northern Delta in their daily lives. The image of weaving and carrying the “That” to sell on the street is very cute. The shape of the “That” can be associated with a lotus bud. I built the “That” blocks with matrix led on stage, combined with flexible lighting according to each performance, so that when the audience looks at it, they feel like flowers, lotus buds. Sometimes, simple things on stage will become very brilliant and poetic. Just like the simple, hidden beauty of the contestants will be honored and shine when coming to the competition.
The outdoor stage is beautiful and airy, but it must also pose challenges for the organizers and directors?
Organizing the final night outdoors will be much more difficult than indoors. Contestants and crew will rehearse under harsh, hot conditions. The stage is located in Binh Minh Square - a very windy area. Setting up the stage is also a challenge. There must be a plan to support it and ensure safety in case of strong winds. No one can predict the weather, but usually the programs I did and the previous Miss Vietnam programs that were held outdoors were also treated very well by the "Professor", so I hope that the "Professor" of the stage will continue to treat this program this time.

If it rains heavily, where will you evacuate the stage?
When organizing outdoor conditions, even the most modern and invested shows in the world, people are forced to face the reality of stormy weather conditions, there is no way to avoid it, there is no umbrella big enough to cover the stage safely. In fact, the tourist area does not have a large enough auditorium to hold the final night. To prepare in parallel on another stage is also very expensive, not simple. On the other hand, the live TV crew has already deployed their troops, it is not easy to move. If it is light rain, it can be held. But if it is heavy rain, strong wind, the risk of bankruptcy is very high. It can be postponed until the rain stops.
Music section, are there any notable performances in the program?
Thanh Lam will have a narrative, contemporary folk performance. Elvis Phuong will perform a lyrical song. The rest I chose very young singers like Yanbi and Yen Le to perform folk songs.Storkremixed with a very youthful modern vibe to support the contestants' bikini competition.
For the opening performance in the South, I chose the Ao Ba Ba, then for the North, I chose the Ao Yem to create symmetry. In addition, the Ao Yem costume is very seductive. Previously, it was worn as an inner shirt or when working (draining water, catching crabs and snails), but when on stage, it helps contestants show off their slim waist and back.
Of course the yếm is beautiful, but afraid that it will reduce the audience's excitement for the bikini competition later?
The director’s intention was to “slowly undress”. That means gradually revealing the attractiveness of the program’s layout, and the same goes for the costumes. The yếm dress worn with a knee-length skirt helps the contestants walk gracefully and flutteringly. As we see, the yếm dress completely exposes the back, but the front is closed enough for the contestants to show off their charm.
Runner-up Thuy Dung will be hosting the red carpet for the final night. Why did you choose her and not anyone else?
I bring you Misses and Runners-up to a series of programs to show your talents. On the other hand, as an insider, it will be more interesting to host.
Thanks director.
