Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has tested martial law in some regions of the country with a view to potentially introducing it nationwide, in order to cancel the presidential election, Russian expert Alexey Martynov said.

President Poroshenko.

"Now, on New Year's Day, he may not need it (martial law), and after the New Year, closer to the elections, perhaps it will be necessary. The important thing here is that martial law has been operating in a trial mode: Provocation — Poroshenko's decree — Parliament passed it," Martynov told Sputnik.

According to him, now that martial law has been established, including from the government's point of view, we can expect more serious provocations, because Poroshenko has no other way to protect his personal power — in fact, he has no chance in a free direct election.

“… for this, of course, the ideal is martial law in the whole country, to achieve which he experimented with this situation… There is a scenario — to what extent Poroshenko's foreign handlers will allow him to act in a similar way,” — the expert added.

Martial law in Ukraine ended on Wednesday, Poroshenko decided not to extend it.
