A shirt costs 100,000-150,000 VND, a dress is less than 200,000 VND or a wool coat is only 250,000-350,000 VND,... selling hundreds of these every day, the female student selling used goods earns 40-50 million VND/month.

European luxury goods cost... tens of thousands

After graduating from high school, with skillful hands and a passion for painting, Nguyen Thu Trang (born in 1993) passed the entrance exam to the Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts with a fairly high score. As a student, Trang made a determination: to earn money to cover her personal expenses.

Seeing many students selling clothes and phone accessories, earning 3-4 million VND per month, Trang was also interested. But with the personality of an art student, she did not want to follow the path of others.

Once by chance, coming to Dong Tac market (Kim Lien, Hanoi), Trang was overwhelmed by the uniqueness and color of the old items (or boxes, second-hand goods, sida goods). From clothes, shoes, handbags to teddy bears, beauty accessories,... were displayed everywhere, with rich designs. More surprisingly, their prices were quite cheap, only 1/10 of the price of new items.

The special thing is that each item is unique, so you don't have to worry about duplicates. If you combine it well, you can create many eye-catching outfits, the price is less than a new shirt/pants bought in the store.

In particular, thanks to her aesthetic eye and ability to choose, Trang discovered that mixed in this pile of seemingly discarded items were a number of genuine "branded" items, with famous labels such as Mango, Zara, H&M,... originating from Europe, Korea, Japan or the "cheapest" are also domestic Chinese goods. There are completely hand-sewn wool coats, beautifully sharp, brand new,... that sell for several million VND in the shop.

Every day the store can sell hundreds of shirts of all kinds, winter coats costing from 200,000 to 300,000 VND.

From 20m2 room to famous store

The individualistic student thought about business. From the afternoons she spent picking up and examining each shirt and skirt, gathering them into large sacks, Trang carried them on her rickety mini bike back to her boarding house and sorted them carefully.

She hired her to clean, fix, iron, and take pictures of old clothes and post them for sale on Facebook. The average price for each item is 100,000-150,000 VND, and coats range from 200,000-300,000 VND each - quite reasonable for students and low-income earners. Even people with means but love unique items come to Trang.

With the profits from her less than 20 square meter room, Trang saved enough money to rent two houses on Lang Street, a student-populated area, to open a store. Thanks to the spacious premises, she imported and displayed more models, and the number of customers also increased. Not only selling to customers in Hanoi, Trang also sells to customers in other provinces.

Trang honestly said: “I put all my heart into them, working passionately and seriously. I did not randomly buy large quantities of packaged clothes in sacks like other places, but carefully selected each item myself, ensuring that even though they were used, they were still of good quality.”

Trang's store is always crowded.

The biggest difference is the investment of effort and time. After careful washing and ironing, Trang also hires models to take photos of the products. “Not only must the price be reasonable, but the item must also be worth the money the buyer paid to bring satisfaction to the customer,” she said.

The first difficulty when Trang started her business was her family's opposition. She said: "My parents did not like me doing business because the family could afford to raise their children, but because I was so passionate, I decided to follow through. After a year of proving myself, my family understood and sympathized. My whole family even went to Hanoi to help their daughter."

Busy business, combined with schoolwork, made Trang lose nearly 5 kilos and was always sleep deprived. Fortunately, she always had friends and a large number of regular customers to support her, so she quickly regained her spirits.

Currently, with two locations and nearly 20 employees, Trang's store receives an average of 100-200 customers per day, earning a profit of up to 50 million VND/month. After deducting all expenses, Trang can pay for her own tuition and living expenses, and has the remaining money to save or buy things for her family.
