The world's first electric car charging road
The route has a 2km long electric rail system, allowing electric cars to charge their batteries via an automatic crane under the vehicle.
The world's first road that allows electric cars to run and charge at the same time has come into operation in the Swedish capital Stockholm,FuturismThe route, called eRoadArlanda, is expected to solve the problem of electric vehicle charging in Sweden, and help save on battery production costs for vehicles.
About 2 km of power line (divided into small sections of 50 m long)has been installed on the route from Stockholm Arlanda Airport to a logistics area outside the city. The vehicle will draw power from the rails via an automatic boom fitted under the vehicle. When the battery is full, the boom will automatically disconnect.According to Hans Säll - CEO of eRoadArlanda Group, most current electric vehicles can apply this technology.
Säll also stressed the safety of the new electric vehicle charging rail system. “There is no electricity on the surface of the rail, like a wall socket in your house. The electricity is 5-6 cm below the surface. You can walk barefoot on it,” said Säll.
According toGuardian, each kilometer of rail track costs about one million USD to produce and install, 50 times cheaper than the cost of building an urban tramway. In addition, the fact that cars can charge while running can help optimize the size of the vehicle's battery, because if charging at fixed stations, the car needs a large battery to store electricity. Smaller batteries will help save resources and production costs.
Sweden's goal is to cut fossil fuel consumption in the transport sector by 70% by 2030, and aim to become a fossil fuel-free country in the future.
