According to the report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the situation of drug crimes and drug abuse in the world and in the region is complicated, increasingly serious and tends to increase sharply in both supply and demand. Southeast Asia, with the "hot spot" of drugs in the Golden Triangle, has become one of the largest drug production and consumption centers in the world.

In Vietnam, the total number of cases and subjects arrested on average each year in the period 2020 - 2024 is more than 20,000 cases and more than 31,000 subjects; the average amount of drugs seized each year is nearly 1,000 kg of heroin; more than 5,000 kg and nearly 5 million synthetic drug pills. In the first 9 months of 2025 alone, more than 19,000 cases were arrested, more than 37,500 subjects for drug crimes; nearly 3.4 tons of drugs and more than 2 million synthetic drug pills, more than 243 kg of heroin, more than 971 kg of marijuana were seized.

Most recently, the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department arrested a ring illegally transporting marijuana from Thailand to Vietnam through logistics services, seizing more than 270 kg of marijuana.
Alarmingly, recently there has been a re-emergence of large-scale domestic drug production.

Typically, in March 2025, the functional forces of the Ministry of Public Security discovered and successfully destroyed an industrial-scale illegal synthetic drug production line led by foreigners in Khanh Hoa, seizing 1.4 tons of synthetic drugs and nearly 80 tons of chemicals, precursors, machinery and equipment used to produce drugs.

Since July 1st, the whole country has fought against nearly 400 cases and 2,000 drug criminals.
