Former CIA director Michael Hayden believes the US military will not follow illegal orders from Donald Trump if he becomes president, according to the Washington Post.
"I am very concerned about the prospect of President Trump governing the country in the way that this candidate has said and done throughout the campaign. The military will not carry out your illegal orders, because if it does, it will be a violation of international rules of armed conflict," Mr. Hayden said in a televised speech today.
Hayden's statement came as billionaire Trump just won overwhelmingly in the Super Tuesday primary votes, becoming the most promising candidate to be nominated by the Republican Party to run for president.
The former CIA director recalled that the real estate billionaire once affirmed that he would allow waterboarding to torture terrorists and even if this method did not work, the US military would target the families of those terrorists.
The US public was once abuzz with the use of waterboarding by CIA agents to try to extract necessary information from prisoners suspected of terrorism.
However, Mr. Hayden affirmed that his statement did not imply that the US military would incite "a coup."
Mr. Michael Hayden, 71 years old, served as director of the US National Security Agency (NSA) from 1999 to 2005, and then as director of the CIA from 2006 to 2009.
