On July 20, ousted South Korean President Park Geun-hye was sentenced to eight years in prison on multiple charges, including the illegal use of funds from the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Park to six years in prison for intelligence fund-related charges and two years for improperly interfering in the selection of candidates for parliamentary elections.
Prosecutors had previously sought a 30-year prison sentence for Park on a series of corruption charges, as well as a fine of 118.5 billion won (about $104 million).
Former President Park Geun-hye is accused of colluding with her longtime friend Choi Soon-sil, who is now in custody, to force major conglomerates, including Samsung, to donate 77.4 billion won (about $68.2 million) to two nonprofit foundations controlled by Choi.
She is also accused of receiving 43.3 billion won (about $38.2 million) from Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong in exchange for helping Mr. Lee inherit management of the company from her father, Chairman Lee Kun-hee.
Ms. Park has not appeared in court since October 2017 and has said her trial is politically motivated. The appeal hearing will take place on August 24.
Previously, on June 29, the above court sentenced former Finance Minister Choi Kyung-hwan, who had close relations with Ms. Park, to 5 years in prison for accepting bribes from the NIS while in office.
Mr. Choi is also accused of asking the NIS to transfer illegal funds to the Presidential Office while Ms. Park was in office.
Mr. Choi was arrested last January while serving as Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economic affairs and Minister of Finance./.
