Border villagers use trees and fences as electric poles.

(Baonghean.vn) - Electric wires strung on treetops, fences, and roofs are the most easily recognizable image when entering Xang Tren village, My Ly commune, Ky Son district. Hereis one of 10 villages in this border commune that does not have a national power grid, so people have to use self-generated electricity.

About half an hour by motorbike from the center of My Ly commune (Ky Son, Nghe An), Xang Tren village still has no national grid electricity. The source of lighting, running the TV, and electric rice cookers all depends on the self-generated electricity from small turbines placed on the Nam Non river. This "amateur" self-generated electricity is very unstable and poses a potential risk of electric shock accidents.

Nam Non River becomes the place to place homemade water turbines of the people of Xang Tren village.

Whenever a good football match is about to take place, Mr. Lo Van Hoanh, a die-hard fan of the English Premier League, goes to the stream to re-install the water turbine. He does not want to miss any moment of his favorite match. When there is football, all the electricity in the house must be focused on the TV.

Mr. Hoanh said: Without electricity, people who are not football fans at home also suffer because they have to live in dark conditions when most of the lights have to be turned off to provide enough power for the bulky TV.

Tree branches become poles for installing electric wires in a convenient way.

A kindergarten teacher who had to prepare lesson plans using a personal computer also said that within 3 years, she had to buy a new computer twice because the unstable power source caused short circuits and damaged screens. "I don't know how many light bulbs I have to replace each year," said a kindergarten teacher with nearly 10 years of experience in the border commune of My Ly. The cost of repairing broken generators and replacing power lines is also a significant amount, far exceeding the current cost of electricity.

Electric wires strung throughout the village pose a potential risk of accidents.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the electrical wiring system here was installed by the people in a haphazard manner. From coconut trees, grapefruit trees, to fences, and wild bushes along the roadside, all can become electric poles. This poses a potential risk of electric shock accidents.

Because of the convenience, power lines are broken and fires happen frequently and people have to fix them themselves.

The electric poles were planted in Xang Tren village not long ago.

According to the reporter's observation, the electricity industry has built electric poles along the road from the center of My Ly commune and Xang Tren village, which makes people look forward to the national grid even more. However, Mr. Lo Van Lieu, Chairman of the People's Committee of My Ly commune, said: "In the local plan, in 2017, no more villages will be connected to the grid. Only 2/12 villages have grid electricity. When the remaining villages will have grid electricity depends on the electricity industry."
