The most inexperienced leadership team in Trump's history

US President-elect Donald Trump may be pleased with his new administration's personnel appointments, but experts say this is alarming.

According to the Huffington Post, Mr. Trump surprised observers by appointing Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education.

Ms. DeVos quickly accepted the nomination, continuing a wave of concern among American political experts. Because, like Mr. Trump's previous choices, Ms. DeVos has no previous experience working in government.

“When we were working on the Obama transition team, one of the biggest concerns was that we were seeing a lot of people coming in who didn’t have federal government experience,” said Norman Eisen, a former ambassador who served on the Obama transition team in 2008. “That concern has come up again.”

American newspapers commented that although the work of selecting the leadership team in the Trump administration has not ended, this could be the most inexperienced US administration in modern history.

Stephen Bannon, the campaign chairman, has been named chief strategist and senior adviser. Mr. Bannon previously headed the conservative news site Breitbart. White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus was the former chairman of the Republican National Committee. And son-in-law Jared Kushner is being considered for the position of White House adviser. Kushner ran the family business before entering politics.

Notably, none of the nominees have served in the US government. On November 23, Trump nominated South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as US Ambassador to the United Nations. Ms. Haley has very little diplomatic experience.

The US newspaper analyzed that Mr. Trump once pledged to “clean up” Washington and his appointment decisions could be an important factor reflecting the American billionaire’s promise. But in the long run, this could lead to problems in leadership and policy development.

“Government, like any other profession, requires expertise,” said Eisen, a fellow at the Brookings Institution. “I don’t think people want people who have never had medical experience to be assigned to perform surgery. And that’s true for government.”

In fact, Ms. DeVos has some experience, having led an organization focused on education reform in Michigan. In contrast, Ben Carson, Mr. Trump's pick for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, has no experience in this field. Mr. Carson himself is worried that he could cause trouble in the Trump administration.

“Unlike Betsy DeVos, who has experience in education, I think Carson doesn’t have a clear understanding of what he’s going to do. Housing is one of the more complicated issues,” said William Galston, a former policy adviser to Bill Clinton and now at the Brookings Institution.

Typically, individuals without government experience are appointed to less demanding positions before they advance in politics, Galston said, adding that he is concerned about the role of Trump allies and family members in the new administration.

Meanwhile, Jay Lefkowitz, a former adviser under George W. Bush who later served on a human rights delegation to North Korea, expressed optimism about Mr. Trump’s choices. Lefkowitz cited Ms. DeVos’s appointment as necessary, given the need for reform at the US Department of Education.

Mr. Trump himself is the strangest president in America, having no experience in politics or the military. These new faces will create a positive factor, Lefkowitz concluded.
