Despite being the examination center for the most capable candidates in Nghe An province, many students at Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School were still dissatisfied with their results.
Candidate Nguyen Ba Thang is a student specializing in Russian. However, he chose Mathematics as his university entrance exam subject because he plans to apply to the University of Architecture.
After finishing the math exam, Thang said he wasn't entirely satisfied: The exam had 50 questions, and the first few were common and easy to answer. However, from question 35 onwards, the questions became increasingly difficult and involved application and advanced application skills. He felt confident only about 40 or more of the answers. Meanwhile, he guessed randomly on many of the last questions, hoping for some luck.
Regarding this exam, candidate Nguyen Quynh Trang also said: "It's easy for scores below 7 points. But scores above 7 points are not easy, especially the application and advanced application questions. The questions cover the entire 12th grade curriculum, such as complex numbers, exponential equations, logarithms, etc."

Sharing his thoughts on this year's Math exam, candidate Le Van Thanh, at the exam center at Co Do High School (Nghia Dan), commented: “The Math exam was relatively manageable, with a high degree of differentiation. With this exam, students who have a solid grasp of the material can easily achieve maximum scores, while those with average academic ability can still complete about 50% of the test. The first 25 questions were relatively easy, allowing candidates to confidently score 5 points. The last 25 questions were designed to differentiate the academic abilities of the candidates, so there were many challenging and demanding questions.”
Candidate Pham Thi Ha Trang from 1/5 High School said that the Math exam wasn't tricky; it consisted of standard problems similar to the Ministry's sample exam. If candidates thoroughly reviewed the content of the 12th-grade curriculum, they could answer 37-40 questions correctly. "I'm fairly good at Math, so I struggled with the last few questions. Many required applying multiple formulas and taking several steps to find the correct answer, so it took quite a bit of time." This candidate also hopes to score 8 points.
At the exam center at Quy Hop High School, many candidates said that the Math exam was difficult and that it would be hard to get a high score unless they specialized in Math.
Student Bui The Tung, from class 12A3, commented: “The exam clearly differentiated the candidates' scores; the first 35 questions were for graduation purposes, and the last 15 questions were for differentiating scores. My exam code was 103, and I think I scored around 7-8 points.”
As for candidate Nguyen Dang Tung, he was quite worried because he only answered 50% of the questions correctly: "I took test code 107 and I found it quite difficult for students like us taking the humanities/social sciences exam. I only managed to answer about 20 questions."
In Do Luong district, many candidates shared the opinion that the exam was designed to differentiate between students and select those with high academic abilities.
Hoang Dang Nghia, a student in class 12T4 at Do Luong 1 High School, said: "I found the last questions on the exam, such as integration, functions, geometry, and sets, to be very difficult."
According to a general survey, most candidates in Do Luong district completed approximately two-thirds of the exam. They left feeling cheerful in the pleasant weather, as it had rained during the exam.
In Con Cuong district, Lo Thi Bich Ngoc, a student from Con Cuong High School, assessed this year's math exam as highly differentiated. The exam included difficult questions designed to distinguish between high-achieving students aiming for scores of 9 or 10. Specifically, questions 1 to 40 were suitable for all students, even average students could answer them. However, from question 40 onwards, only students with above-average academic ability could solve them.
However, the exam questions were mostly based on the curriculum that had been reviewed. With thorough preparation, even average students could do well on 60% of the exam. As for Ngoc, who specializes in social sciences, she estimates she scored around 5-6 points in Math.
Regarding the Math exam, Mr. Nguyen Huu Thanh, a teacher at Bac Yen Thanh High School, commented: "This year's Math exam is good, meeting the requirements for both graduation and university admissions. In terms of exam structure, the knowledge areas covered are all within the curriculum and have been reviewed by schools for students."
After reviewing several math exam papers, Mr. Thanh said that questions 1 to 30 are at the knowledge and comprehension level, with nothing surprising or unusual in terms of knowledge or question format. Students can quickly answer these questions using a calculator or by applying mathematical formulas.
However, from question 30 onwards, the exam requires application skills. Even for questions with moderate application skills, candidates must have a thorough understanding of the underlying mathematical principles to solve them, for example, question 32 of exam code 120 or question 40 of exam code 123.
According to teacher Nguyen Huu Thanh, the number of high-level application questions in the Math exam is approximately the last 10 questions. These questions, while similar in format to previous years' exams, require candidates to be more flexible in applying their knowledge. Simply applying formulas mechanically will be difficult to solve. Instead, candidates must put pen to paper and think critically to solve the problems. After attempting to solve some of the high-level application questions, teacher Nguyen Huu Thanh noted that the solutions are concise, not complicated or lengthy, but require creative, logical thinking and a deep understanding of the underlying mathematical principles to discover the solution method.
With this exam, above-average and excellent students will easily demonstrate their abilities and differentiate themselves. Specifically, for high-level application questions, above-average students can still solve them, but those with excellent or outstanding abilities will find solutions faster. Above-average students will take more time and answer fewer questions correctly. Regarding the exam scores, Mr. Thanh predicts that a score range of 5-7 is easily achievable for students who grasp the basic knowledge and have studied seriously beforehand. This score also meets the requirements for graduation. Achieving a high score will be more difficult, and a perfect 10 in Mathematics will certainly not be common.
