According to RT (Russia), Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on March 4 implied that US Senator Lindsey Graham had gone crazy over the ongoing tension between Moscow and the West, after the politician called for the assassination of President Vladimir Putin.

“Not everyone can keep calm these days, some (people) lose their senses,” Peskov said at a press conference, commenting on Senator Graham’s statements on Fox News on March 3. During the program, Graham suggested that “someone in Russia” should kill Putin.

In his latest response, spokesman Peskov pointed to the "hysterical stirring up" of anti-Russian sentiment in the US, calling it a kind of "Russophobic crisis".

Earlier, on March 4, Russian Ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, also criticized Senator Graham's comments as "unacceptable and outrageous." Moscow also demanded an official explanation from the US about what it called de facto support for a terrorist act.

On March 3, Senator Graham, representing the state of South Carolina, declared that the "only way" to end Russia's attack on Ukraine is to kill Mr. Putin.

The United States has made efforts to target foreign leaders in the past. Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro was the target of numerous CIA-orchestrated assassination plots. The U.S. military has not shied away from openly hunting down foreign leaders in recent times, such as the case of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

On February 24, Russian President Putin launched a military operation in Ukraine with the goal of "demilitarizing" the country, in order to protect two self-proclaimed republics in Donbass (Eastern Ukraine) whose independence Moscow recently recognized.
