Unexpected attack of Russian Navy's Poseidon super torpedo
Not only does it have terrible destructive power, the Poseidon nuclear super torpedo equipped on the Russian Navy's Belgorod submarine also possesses an extremely unique fighting style.
The special nuclear submarine Belgorod of Project 09852 will officially undergo sea trials in June 2020. If everything goes well, the ship will be put into service 3 months later.
"Currently, most of the equipment systems have been successfully tested in the experimental tank (similar to the marine environment). According to the plan, the ship will be officially equipped for the Russian Navy in September 2020," Sevmash Shipyard General Director Mikhail Budnichenko said on September 9.

Russia will officially equip the Belgorod submarine and Poseidon torpedoes in September 2020. |
Regarding the number of Poseidon torpedoes equipped for each Belgorod, TASS quoted a source from the Russian Navy revealing that each new generation submarine is designed to carry 6 nuclear super torpedoes for each mission.
Poseidon has a range of up to 10,000 km, can dive to a depth of 1,000 m, and can attack targets at speeds of up to 200 km/h - faster than any anti-submarine weapon the US and NATO have. This weapon can carry a 100Mt nuclear warhead to destroy all targets it aims at.
The Poseidon super torpedo is classified as a new type of restraining weapon not because of its 100 Mt capacity, but what makes it special is the way this weapon attacks the target. Once it reaches the firing location, Poseidon can lie in wait for a long time to wait for the signal to detonate.
When officially deployed, Poseidon can solve many tasks: destroy naval bases, army groups, air bases on the coast or on islands... And to carry out those tasks, the warhead capacity can change. Poseidon can also collect intelligence, but in this case, it needs to return to the mother ship.
