Mr. Trump hopes to redirect billions of dollars in cash, which is spent on climate change research projects, to the US space program, according to the Daily Star. Previously, the newly elected US president had repeatedly declared that he would suspend all government-funded climate change research programs.

The United States was the first country to put a man on the Moon when astronaut Neil Armstrong set foot on the planet in 1969. However, no American has returned to the Moon since 1972.

There is also another sign that the newly elected US president really does have plans to send Americans back to the Moon.

Donald Trump's appointment of Republican Newt Gingrich to a senior position will bring the United States closer to its plan to build a permanent research base on the Moon, according to analysts on NASA and the US space program.

Mr. Gingrich has always supported sending astronauts to the Moon, turning the asteroid into a springboard for conducting research into the Solar System.

He also believes that the Moon could become a "second home" for humans, and declared that the US could claim sovereignty over the Moon, turning it into the 54th "state".

Observers also believe that Trump may be considering appointing another Republican candidate, James Brisdentine, to take charge of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This is also a supporter of Trump's plan to send Americans to the Moon again.

Another candidate predicted for that position is Scott Pace - NASA's deputy administrator under President George Bush. Bush's space program called "Constellation" from 2000-2008 with the ambition of landing on the Moon for the second time in 2020 was eliminated as soon as his successor Barack Obama took office.

Meanwhile, Mr. Trump's space advisor Bob Walker also said that NASA's new goal is to explore the entire Solar System by the end of this century.

"I think this is a very good goal. 50 years ago, we were able to set foot on the Moon," Mr. Walker emphasized.
