According to the indictment, at about 7:00 p.m. on January 15, 2017, Vi Van Dau passed by the house of Mr. Nguyen The Ky (born in 1959, Nghia Lien commune, Nghia Dan) and saw that the gate was open and the lights were on, so he had the idea of stealing. Dau picked up a knife and sneaked into the house. When he got to the kitchen, he was discovered by Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tuyet (Mr. Ky's wife). Ms. Tuyet screamed loudly and Dau swung the knife and slashed her in the head.
Hearing the cry for help, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thanh (Mrs. Tuyet's daughter) ran down to the kitchen and was slashed on the left shoulder by Dau. At this time, Mr. Ky rushed to wrestle with Dau. Seeing Thanh pick up the knife, Dau shook Mr. Ky's hand and ran away. After committing the crime, Dau hid in a nearby church.
About an hour later, Dau left the church and followed Highway 48, sneaked into Mr. Nguyen Quoc Khanh's house (same Nghia Lien commune) and rummaged through his belongings but took nothing but a set of clothes.
Dau continued walking along the inter-village road. Because he was so hungry, he broke into the chimney of Mrs. Luong Thi Phan's house (born in 1967, residing in Nghia Lien commune) to look for food. When Mrs. Phan discovered him, Dau used a knife to stab the homeowner in the face many times. The knife broke the handle, Dau grabbed a brick and hit Mrs. Phan hard on the back of the neck before running away.
Ms. Tuyet, Ms. Phan, and Ms. Thanh were taken to the hospital by their relatives for emergency care and treatment. According to the forensic examination, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet suffered 55% health damage; Ms. Luong Thi Phan suffered 9% health damage.
On January 17, 2017, Vi Van Dau was arrested while on the run. Afterwards, Vi Van Dau was prosecuted for “Murder”.
At the trial, Vi Van Dau admitted his crime. Dau said he was addicted to drugs and had no job, so he thought of a way to break into people's houses to steal property. When discovered, Dau used a weapon to attack and escape.
The panel of judges determined that the Provincial People’s Procuracy’s prosecution of Vi Van Dau for “Murder” was the right person, the right crime, and not unjust. The fact that the victims did not die was beyond the defendant’s subjective will. The panel of judges ordered Dau to compensate Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet 150 million VND and Ms. Luong Thi Phan 15 million VND.
Previously in 2014, Vi Van Dau was sentenced by Thanh Chuong District People’s Court to 24 months in prison for “Illegal drug trafficking”. The defendant just completed his prison term in April 2016.
