There are expected to be 198 National Assembly constituencies with 896 candidates to elect 500 deputies.
Mr. Le Minh Thong, Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly's Law Committee, said that 896 candidates for National Assembly deputies is the minimum number of candidates required when there are expected to be 198 constituencies.
At the first Consultative Conference to elect the XIV National Assembly Deputies organized by the Presidium of the VIII Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front on the morning of February 16, Mr. Le Truyen, former Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, wondered: “Many voters wondered why the first Consultative Conference to elect the National Assembly Deputies was only held now, but before that, there was information in the press that there were 896 candidates. Where did this number come from? The first Consultative Conference had not done anything yet but had this result?”

Answering this question, Mr. Le Minh Thong, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly's Law Committee, said that 896 candidates for National Assembly deputies is the minimum number of candidates required when we plan to have 198 constituencies.
Mr. Le Minh Thong cited Clause 6, Article 57 of the Law on Election of National Assembly Deputies and People's Council Deputies, which stipulates: "The number of people on the list of candidates for National Assembly deputies in each constituency must be at least 2 people more than the number of elected deputies determined for that constituency. In case of vacancy of candidates due to force majeure, the National Election Council shall consider and decide."
“So there are 198 constituencies x 2, the remainder is 396 people. This number plus 500 delegates elected according to the law, we must have at least 896 candidates, and the more the remainder the better,” Mr. Thong said./.
