(Baonghean.vn) - The increasing trend of making homemade jam during the traditional Tet holiday has made the places selling this product always bustling. Walking through the markets in Vinh City, people are rushing to buy coconut to make jam when Tet is only a month away.

Faced with warnings about the risk of food safety due to jams using unknown colorants, many housewives have now made their own jams for their families during Tet.

Some simple and easy-to-buy ingredients for making jam today are carrots, ginger, sweet potatoes, kumquats, apples, etc. However, coconut jam is still much more popular because it is not too difficult to make. Just a little bit of ingenuity and creativity is needed to have different flavors of coconut jam with diverse colors such as coffee coconut jam, passion fruit, pandan leaves, and gac coconut jam.

The strong demand during Tet holiday also causes the coconut supply to increase rapidly.Tet Mau Tuat is still more than a month away, but in some areas such as near Ben Thuy market, Vinh market, Quan Lau market (Vinh city)... coconut trading is quite active; fresh coconut shops in the markets all accept coconut scraping for customers to make jam.

Although demand has increased, the price of this item has not increased compared to last year, currently selling at markets for 20,000 - 25,000 VND/fruit. Customers can buy ready-made shredded coconut (sold by kg) or buy it and shred it themselves.

Ms. Thanh, the owner of a coconut shop near Ben Thuy market, said that for nearly a week, many customers have come to buy coconuts to make jam, but her shop is not worried about shortages because the supply of coconuts from Ben Tre is continuous. Every day, she has to hire people to carve nearly 500 coconuts to wholesale to retail stores at the market and some sources of coconut jam to sell online.

Tran Van Kien’s coconut shop near Quan Lau market is always crowded with customers. In addition to selling whole, peeled coconuts, he also sells shredded coconut for those who don’t have time to process them. “Coconut prices are still stable this year, and my shop sells more than 100 coconuts a day to customers to make jam,” Kien said.

Having just selected 5 coconuts with their shells cleaned, Ms. Vu Thi Yen, resident of Truong Thi ward, Vinh city, said: "Every Tet holiday, I always buy coconuts to make jam because it is very easy to make. The cost of 1kg of jam is only 60,000 - 70,000 VND, which is still cheaper than buying it outside. Moreover, it is safe to eat and especially helps to make the family atmosphere on Tet more meaningful."

People buy coconuts to make jam for Tet because they are afraid of dirty food, not ensuring quality and to save money on Tet shopping. In addition to people buying for family use, this year the amount of coconut consumed is high because many people prepare sources to make coconut jam to sell online./.
