The world's most expensive Welsh player believes England always think they are strong before they actually do anything.

At Euro 2016, Wales are in Group B with England, Russia and Slovakia. Wales and England will meet in the second match next week, in Lens on June 15. But Gareth Bale, the Real Madrid winger, has already sparked a war of words between the two sides.

“England are always arrogant before they do anything concrete. Wales vs England is like any other derby. You never want to lose to your enemies,” Bale told a press conference on Friday, ahead of their Group B opener against Slovakia on Saturday, June 11. Bale and his teammates will face England on home soil later this year.Stade Bollaert-Delelis at Lens Agglo.

Bale had the opportunity to play for England, but decided to stick with his home team.

The 26-year-old continued: “I think we have more pride and passion for football than they do. We will show that in the next game. It is great to be involved in a game like that. For me, it was probably the highlight of the group stage of this tournament. It was the game we were all looking forward to.”

“But we don’t feel any pressure. England are very proud. So we will go to them and believe we can beat them. They believe they can beat us. I’m sure it will be a great game and hopefully we will end up winning,” Bale stressed.

Bale may have chosen to play for England because his grandmother is English, before he made his Wales debut at the age of 16. So there is a view that Wales' qualification for Euro 2016, their first major international tournament since 1958, vindicated Bale's decision to play for his homeland.

But Bale insisted: “When I chose Wales, I didn’t think about the possibility that I would never play in a major tournament. I would never play for England. Qualifying for Euro 2016 didn’t prove anything to me. If you’re Welsh, look at our rugby, we’re prouder and more passionate than anyone else.”

“It’s hard to explain it in detail. But we feel proud to be Welsh. We feel proud when we see and hear people singing the national anthem in the stadium, like when we felt tired after the win over Belgium in the qualifiers.
