Today, as the US retaliatory tariffs take effect, market information is becoming increasingly volatile. Notably, there is a possibility that the US will exclude coffee and some other non-domesticated goods to avoid impacting supply chains and consumers.

From July 1st, Vietnamese coffee exporters will have to temporarily pay an additional 5% VAT instead of being immediately subject to a 0% tax rate. They will receive a tax refund later, but this creates cash flow difficulties, especially when coffee prices are currently high.

The Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA) has proposed removing green coffee beans from the list of items subject to the 5% VAT tax due to the complicated and inefficient tax refund procedures, as 85% of Vietnam's coffee production is for export.

World coffee prices today

On the London exchange, online robusta coffee futures contracts for September 2025 closed this morning's trading session (August 1st) at $3,375 per ton, down 1.06% ($36 per ton) from yesterday's session; contracts for November 2025 fell 1.23% ($31 per ton) to $3,304 per ton.

On the New York Stock Exchange, compared to yesterday, the price of Arabica coffee futures for September 2025 delivery increased by 1.14% (3.35 US cents/pound), reaching 296.75 US cents/pound; the contract for December 2025 delivery increased by 1.08% (3.1 US cents/pound), reaching 289.95 US cents/pound.

The US – the world's largest coffee consumer – could face increased costs if import tariffs are implemented. This is expected to reduce consumer demand, putting pressure on Arabica coffee prices.

In Brazil, the world's largest producer of Arabica coffee, weather conditions are showing positive signs. The state of Minas Gerais has recorded rainfall more than 200% above average, easing concerns about drought and contributing to lower prices. According to Citigroup, the 2025-2026 crop year is expected to have a surplus of 6.1 million bags of coffee thanks to increased production from Brazil, Vietnam, and Indonesia. This continues to put downward pressure on prices in the long term.

Robusta inventories on the ICE exchange reached 7,029 lots (the highest in a year), while Arabica stocks fell to 775,476 bags (the lowest in 3.5 months). This difference reflects the divergent trends between the two types of coffee.
