In the US market, although the volume of coffee exports decreased by nearly 30%, the value increased by 11% compared to 2023. This shows that the price of coffee exported to the US is at a higher level, compensating for the decrease in volume.
Notably, the Chinese market recorded strong growth in both volume and value. Coffee prices in the global market are on an upward trend, mainly due to lower than average rainfall in Brazil. This has raised concerns about the prospects of the 2025-2026 coffee crop in Brazil – the world's largest coffee producer and exporter.
Minas Gerais state, Brazil’s largest arabica coffee growing region, recorded just 35.2 mm of rain last week, according to the Somar Meteorologia, a weather agency. That’s only 65% of the historical average, adding to the pressure on coffee supplies.
Brazilian coffee producers had sold 79% of their 2024-2025 crop as of December 11, a monthly survey by Safras & Mercado found. That was 9% higher than a month ago, suggesting sales were picking up.
The recent price surge, coupled with speculation about a possible reduction in the next harvest, is keeping sellers on their toes, said Safras & Mercado consultant Gil Barabach. “Increasing pessimism about the size of the upcoming Brazilian crop is the main factor keeping producers cautious,” he said.
