After the joyful days of Spring and Tet, since yesterday - the 4th day of the Lunar New Year, many farmers in the Central Highlands provinces have started production, watering coffee, and harvesting the rest of this year's crop with the hope of a favorable production year with a good harvest and good prices.
Provinces in the Central Highlands had a bumper crop last year, with many households earning billions of dong thanks to high coffee prices and stable output.
Some farmers have decided to keep their products and wait for prices to increase. Local authorities and cooperatives in these provinces have actively supported farmers in preserving agricultural products and finding outlets, thereby significantly increasing the value of coffee.
World coffee prices today
Coffee prices on the world market also fluctuate:
Robusta Coffee (London):
Delivery March 2025: Down 16 USD/ton, to 5,718 USD/ton.
Delivery in May 2025: Down 15 USD/ton, to 5,694 USD/ton.
Arabica Coffee (New York):
March 2025 delivery: Up 4.45 cents/lb, to 377.85 cents/lb.
May 2025 delivery: Up 3.2 cents/lb, to 371.35 cents/lb.
The start of the fifth half of the week saw coffee prices on both markets marking a strong increase as last week Arabica closed at 347.55 cents, up 19.20 cents from the previous week.
In particular, the Robusta price that Vietnamese farmers are interested in has also increased as last week (week 4) closed at 5544 USD/ton, increasing to 538 USD/ton, not counting the new week at the beginning of the Lunar New Year when this news was released. In just 3 sessions of the new week (week 5), the Robusta price has increased by 16 USD/ton, reaching 5560 USD/ton when closing on Tuesday, January 28.
The reason is believed to be because farmers in the leading producing country Brazil are still reluctant to sell due to uncertainty about the upcoming crop and they hope prices will be even higher, in addition, the Vietnamese market is also closed for the Lunar New Year holiday, making the market even more lacking in sellers.
Concerns about global coffee supplies have been fueled by fund buying amid tight coffee prices. It is worth noting that Volcafe’s December survey forecast for global arabica coffee production in 2025/26 was for a decline of 8.5 million bags, larger than the 5.5 million bag deficit in 2024/25 and the fifth consecutive year of deficit.
One factor helping to stabilize coffee prices was Conab's forecast last Tuesday that cut its estimate for Brazil's 2024 coffee crop by 1.1% to 54.2 million bags from its September 2024 estimate of 54.8 million bags.
Robusta prices are supported by lower production. Vietnam’s coffee output in the 2023/24 crop year has fallen 20% to 1.472 MMT, the lowest in four years, due to drought. In addition, Vietnam’s General Statistics Office reported on January 10 that Vietnam’s coffee exports in 2024 have fallen 17.1% year-on-year to 1.35 million tons.
Robusta coffee inventories monitored by ICE rose to a nearly four-month high of 4,603 lots on Friday, while arabica stocks fell to a six-week low of 928,935 bags on Friday.
