According to a report by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Nai province, by the end of November, the province had 1,979 livestock farms that had stopped operating or relocated according to the roadmap by the deadline of December 31. Of these, 1,971 farms had completely stopped raising livestock. A few remaining farms moved from residential areas to remote gardens to continue operating as small-scale household farms.
Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice Chairman of the Dong Nai Livestock Association, said the province is implementing a plan to relocate thousands of livestock farms out of residential areas and areas that are not suitable for planning. This has contributed to a decrease in the total livestock herd compared to the same period last year. In addition, African swine fever has caused severe damage to many livestock farms, especially small-scale households, leading to a shutdown.
Despite the impact on small-scale farming, large corporations and enterprises in the industry have maintained stable growth. At the same time, many enterprises are increasing pork imports to meet consumer demand. However, economic difficulties may continue to affect purchasing power in the market, causing pork consumption to slow down.
Mr. Doan commented that the pork market at the end of 2024, even during the peak of the Lunar New Year 2025, is unlikely to experience a shortage of supply or a sudden increase in price. This is thanks to the stable supply from large enterprises and additional imports.
