In general, the price of live pigs nationwide is currently fluctuating between 60,000 - 64,000 VND/kg, with a slight increase in some southern provinces.

Currently, pig production from small-scale farms has decreased to only 35-40%, while 60-65% comes from professional farms and large farms. However, small and medium-sized farms and households still lack professionalism and production costs are still high.

Pig farming remains the key industry, accounting for more than 62% of total domestic meat production. By July 2024, the total pig herd in the country is estimated to reach more than 25 million (up 2.9% over the same period in 2023), of which the sow herd is about 3 million and stable.

The pig farming industry is shifting from small-scale to professional households and large farms. Over the past 5 years, the rate of household farming has decreased by 5-7% per year; in the period 2019-2022 alone, small-scale farming has decreased by 15-20%. Currently, output from households has decreased to 35-40%, while large farms account for 60-65%.

Regarding the epidemic situation, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Health, Mr. Phan Quang Minh, said that from January 1 to August 12, 2024, there were 863 outbreaks of African swine fever in 46 provinces and cities with more than 57,000 pigs infected, died and had to be destroyed.

Currently, the country has 970 disease-free pig farming facilities and areas in 55 provinces and cities, certified safe for diseases such as African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, and blue ear disease.

However, slaughter control and veterinary hygiene inspection still face many difficulties. Investment in centralized slaughterhouses is hindered by high costs, slow capital recovery time, and low demand in many localities. In addition, the livestock and veterinary management system in some places is still chaotic, making control difficult. In particular, although there are centralized slaughterhouses, only 40-50% of capacity is used, and many places still have illegal slaughter.
