In general, the price of live pigs today recorded a slight increase in the Northern region, with the highest price reaching 66,000 VND/kg. Nationwide, the price of live pigs is fluctuating between 62,000 and 66,000 VND/kg.

On the afternoon of December 16, 2024, at the conference to review veterinary work in 2024 and deploy tasks for 2025, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien requested the Department of Animal Health to continue monitoring, updating and reporting on the disease situation nationwide, especially dangerous diseases.

Mr. Nguyen Van Long, Director of the Department of Animal Health, reported that in 2024, many dangerous diseases in livestock and poultry have increased compared to 2023. Particularly for African swine fever, from the beginning of the year to December 15, 2024, the country recorded 1,575 outbreaks with 89,341 pigs dead and culled. There are currently 71 outbreaks in 44 districts of 18 provinces and cities that have not passed 21 days. Compared to the same period last year, the number of outbreaks increased by nearly 79% and the number of pigs culled increased by 2.13 times.

Mr. Long also said that the 2024 surveillance results showed that 60% of African swine fever virus strains in the North carried both B646L (p72) and E183L (p54) genes belonging to genotype II. The remaining 40% had a gene combining genotypes I and II. These recombinant virus strains are similar to the strains that appeared in China, Mongolia and Cameroon from 2021-2023.

The risk of African swine fever re-emerging on a large scale is very high, although there is a vaccine for pigs. However, awareness of the dangers of the disease in some localities is still limited. Disease control is difficult due to a lack of veterinary staff, funds to buy chemicals, lime powder and means of destruction.

Regarding foot-and-mouth disease, in 2024, the country recorded 72 outbreaks in 20 provinces and cities with 2,240 infected cattle and 163 dead and culled. Currently, there is 1 outbreak in Bac Kan that has not passed 21 days. Compared to 2023, the number of outbreaks increased by 2.48 times, the number of infected and culled cattle increased by 2.18 times.

According to Mr. Long, the risk of foot-and-mouth disease reoccurring is very high because some localities have not yet fully vaccinated. In particular, the virus can survive for a long time in the environment, especially in areas where there have been previous outbreaks.

The leader of the Department of Animal Health warned that it is necessary to strengthen disease prevention measures and fully vaccinate to prevent outbreaks and widespread spread.
