There are less than 3 months left until Lunar New Year 2025. Normally at this time, pig farmers in Dong Nai have started to restore their herds to supply the Ho Chi Minh City market in the last months of the year. However, this year, many farmers are hesitant to restore their herds, leading to a forecast of a shortage in supply.

September and October are usually the months when farmers start to rebuild their herds in preparation for the year-end consumption season and Tet. Last year, Mr. Nguyen Trung Tri in Xuan Loc district raised 2,000 new pigs, but this year, he only rebuilt his herd of about 500 pigs, a decrease of 70%.

Mr. Tri shared: “Prices are better this year, but African swine fever is raging, causing mass pig deaths. I only restocked the herd sparingly and mainly kept it over Tet.”

In addition to the epidemic, the high price of piglets has also made farmers cautious. Mr. Pham Viet Phuong, owner of a farm with more than 1,000 pigs in Ho Chi Minh City, said he has no plans to restock for this Tet season because the price of piglets has nearly doubled compared to last year, ranging from 2 million to 2.5 million VND/pig. The price of animal feed has also increased, making him worried that he will not make a profit when restocking. He plans to sell the last batch of pigs of the year, about 200 pigs, at the end of November and keep the herd for the crop after Tet.

Dong Nai Livestock Association said that the locality has also reduced the amount of pigs supplied to Ho Chi Minh City by about 20%, to less than 4,000 pigs per day.

Pig prices have also fluctuated erratically. In September, prices ranged from 66,000 to 67,000 VND/kg, but in the past half month they have dropped to 60,000 to 64,000 VND/kg.

Although the price above 60,000 VND/kg is still profitable, with the complicated epidemic situation, many farmers are still worried about the risks when investing in herd restoration.
