The market is showing signs of recovery after US President Donald Trump announced a reduction in import tariffs to 10% and a 90-day suspension of reciprocal tariffs on countries that do not retaliate. This move somewhat eased concerns about global trade tensions.
According to data from the International Trade Center (ITC) released by the Vietnam Pepper Association, in February 2025, the US imported more than 5,900 tons of pepper, down sharply by 33.3% compared to the previous month. Of which, Vietnam is still the main supplier with more than 3,200 tons, followed by Indonesia with more than 1,100 tons.
In the first two months of the year, the total amount of pepper imported by the US reached nearly 14,850 tons, a slight increase of 5.3% compared to the same period last year. Vietnam still holds a large advantage with nearly 61% of the market share, although this figure has decreased by about 18.6% compared to the same period last year. In contrast, Indonesia and India are increasing their market share significantly.
Notably, despite being affected by tax policies, Vietnamese pepper still maintains a strong position in the US market thanks to its large output and stable quality. In the context of a shrinking global supply, Vietnam continues to be the leading country in pepper production and export.
Mr. Phung Van Sam, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hanfimex Group, said that after the US announced the tax postponement, some import partners asked Vietnamese businesses to resume orders. However, there are still customers who choose to continue waiting for new developments. Currently, importers are recalculating costs with the additional tax rate of 10%, so they temporarily prioritize selling inventory instead of importing more.
At the same time, when coffee prices fell unexpectedly, many international customers, especially outside the US market, increased their purchases. This reflects the still very large demand in the world market and shows that many countries see this as an opportunity to stock up when prices are at attractive levels.
