According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, as of December 15, Vietnam had exported nearly 242,000 tons of pepper, earning 1.26 billion USD. Although the export volume was 23,900 tons lower than in 2023, the export value far exceeded the 910.5 million USD mark, marking a record high since 2017.
Domestically, pepper prices recorded a sharp increase from VND80,000/kg at the beginning of the year to a peak of VND180,000/kg in mid-June, then cooled down but remained at a high level. This helped pepper growers achieve large profits last year.
However, the 2025 pepper crop is expected to be delayed by 1-2 months due to the impact of prolonged drought, making supply even more scarce. Realizing this situation, import markets have proactively increased imports early and currently most have enough goods until the first quarter of 2025.
The year-end market became quiet as consumption demand decreased, causing pepper prices to have no further growth momentum.
In the world market
At the end of the most recent trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed the price of Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) at 6,835 USD/ton, down 0.31%; the price of Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 at 6,275 USD/ton; the price of Kuching black pepper (Malaysia) ASTA at 8,400 USD/ton.
Muntok white pepper price is 8,945 USD/ton, down 0.3%; Malaysian ASTA white pepper price is at 10,600 USD/ton.
Vietnam black pepper price is traded at 6,400 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 6,700 USD/ton; white pepper price is at 9,600 USD/ton. IPC reduces pepper price in Indonesia again.
Vietnam's three largest pepper export markets are currently the US, Germany and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), accounting for 44.1% of total export turnover. In particular, exports to Germany recorded an impressive increase, 2.4 times higher than the same period in 2023, reflecting the strong attraction of Vietnam's "black gold" in the international market.
The upcoming pepper harvest in the pepper growing capitals is expected to yield around 170,000 tonnes. Notably, after a year of high pepper prices, farmers are no longer inclined to expand their planting areas, but instead focus on improving productivity and quality through organic farming methods.
In addition, many farmers have switched to the model of intercropping pepper with coffee and fruit trees. This combination not only helps optimize nutrition but also supports effective pest control, ensuring stable output and continuing to maintain the world leading position of the Vietnamese pepper industry.
