According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in the first 18 days of December, the export prices of black pepper and white pepper fluctuated inconsistently compared to the end of November.
Black pepper prices increased by about $205/ton in Indonesia and $200/ton in Brazil and Vietnam, but decreased similarly in Malaysia. In the white pepper market, prices in Malaysia and Indonesia decreased by $100/ton and $110/ton respectively, while Vietnam increased by $200/ton.
Pepper demand is recovering, especially in China. The year-end festive season and reports of lower exports from Vietnam have boosted global pepper prices. Pepper prices are expected to rise in early 2025 due to reduced supplies and higher transportation costs.
Freight rates from Asia to Europe have increased recently, with daily rates to the Mediterranean reaching nearly $6,000 per FEU, up $1,000 per FEU from the end of November 2024. This can be attributed to efficient capacity management by carriers and increased demand ahead of the Lunar New Year.
