Indonesia, one of the “big guys” in pepper production, has started the main harvest since July, bringing a large amount of pepper to the market, putting pressure on prices. Indonesia’s pepper exports have increased sharply since the beginning of 2024, in contrast to the decline in Brazil and Vietnam. Indonesia’s pepper output in 2024 is expected to reach 85,000 tons, up 5% over the previous year.

In India, harvesting has ended in the southern regions, leading to high inventories and further price declines. In Vietnam, despite challenges from weather and pests, pepper production is expected to be similar or slightly higher, estimated at 170,000 tonnes. Abundant pepper supply in the market could continue to put downward pressure on prices.

The world economy is unstable with high inflation, rising interest rates and geopolitical conflicts, raising concerns of a global recession. Pepper importers have become cautious, reducing purchases to avoid risks, reducing demand and pepper prices.

World pepper prices today

Update on world pepper prices from the International Pepper Association (IPC), at the end of the most recent trading session, IPC listed the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper at 6,920 USD/ton (up 0.62%), and the price of Muntok white pepper at 9,458 USD/ton (up 0.61%).

The price of Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper was at USD 6,600/ton (down 2.22%). The price of Malaysian ASTA black pepper remained stable at USD 8,800/ton; the price of this country's ASTA white pepper reached USD 11,200/ton.

Vietnamese black pepper prices today are stable at a high level, trading at 6,800 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 7,100 USD/ton; white pepper prices at 10,150 USD/ton.

Vietnam’s black and white pepper export prices have increased in the past week, but black pepper prices have remained stable. In the first half of September 2024, Vietnam exported 6,917 tons of pepper, earning 42.3 million USD. Compared to August, the export volume decreased by 30%, reaching only 10,082 tons and 58.8 million USD.

According to a report from Ptexim, demand for pepper in major markets such as the US, China, and the EU is weak, leading to a slowdown in purchases. Pepper suppliers are also cautious in selling raw materials.

Due to weak demand, pepper prices have been falling continuously recently. Traditional markets in Vietnam have also imported large quantities of pepper and are not in a hurry to buy more, waiting for the market.
