Aware of the opportunities and challenges ahead, Vietnam's pepper industry is stepping up green production. The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association reports that the industry is focusing on developing sustainable raw material areas, achieving important certifications required by the EU, the US, and Japan. Simultaneously, training programs for farmers and preferential policies for transitioning to green production models are also being implemented.

Collaboration between public and private organizations in research on new plant varieties, processing technologies, and post-harvest preservation is helping to improve product quality, reduce losses, and protect the environment.

Although pepper cultivation accounts for only 15% of coffee cultivation and 12% of rubber cultivation, its export value reaches 23% of coffee and 38% of rubber. Experts suggest that instead of expanding cultivation area indiscriminately, focus should be placed on improving quality and promoting organic farming.

Currently, key pepper-growing regions such as Dak Nong, Dak Lak, and Binh Phuoc are developing according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, aiming to achieve 5,000 hectares of organic pepper by 2030.

The trade value of the spice industry is estimated to reach nearly US$21 billion by 2025 and could hit US$27 billion by 2030.

Shifting consumer preferences and growing awareness of functional foods are driving the growth of the spice industry. Consumers prioritize not only convenience but also sustainability and novel flavors. In particular, they are willing to pay for premium, organic, and traceable spice products.

According to Mr. Prakash Jhanwer, Director of OFI (USA), Vietnam is currently a production center for many important agricultural products such as rice, coffee, and pepper. Among these, pepper is considered Vietnam's "black gold," with enormous growth potential.

The spice market continues to thrive as home cooking culture grows increasingly popular worldwide. This has led to a significant increase in retail sales of spices, creating further opportunities for the spice manufacturing and export industry.
