The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association said that the industry is focusing on developing sustainable raw material areas, achieving important certifications as required by the EU, the US and Japan. At the same time, training programs for farmers and preferential policies for converting production models are also being implemented.
Collaboration between public and private organizations in research on new crop varieties, post-harvest processing and preservation technologies is helping to improve product quality, reduce losses and protect the environment.
Although the pepper growing area accounts for only 15% of coffee and 12% of rubber, the export value of pepper reaches 23% of coffee and 38% of rubber. Experts say that the growing area should not be expanded massively but should focus on improving quality and promoting organic farming.
Currently, key growing areas such as Dak Nong, Dak Lak and Binh Phuoc are developing according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, aiming to reach 5,000 hectares of organic pepper by 2030.
