World gold prices rose to their highest level in nearly two months, thanks to demand for safe assets as conflict in the Middle East erupted following large-scale Israeli airstrikes on Iran.
Specifically, the spot gold price increased by 1.82%, after reaching its highest level since April 22. For the whole week, gold increased by more than 1.9%. Meanwhile, the price of gold futures in the US also increased by 1%, reaching 3,438 USD/ounce.
Violence escalated after Israel launched strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military commanders. Israel said it was a long-term campaign to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. In response, Iran launched about 100 drones toward Israeli territory.
This situation increases market instability, especially when the global economy is already being affected by the trade policies of former US President Donald Trump.
The attacks have boosted gold buying sentiment, but it is too early to tell whether the rally will be sustained, said Carsten Menke, an analyst at Julius Baer.
“If crude oil supplies are disrupted by direct attacks or political sanctions or if conflict spreads in the region, gold prices could react more strongly and sustainably,” he said.
This week, US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data showed lower-than-expected inflation in May, followed by a report that producer prices also rose more slowly than expected. However, physical gold demand in Asian markets has been dampened by high prices. In India, gold prices crossed the psychologically important 100,000 rupee mark, keeping buyers on their toes.
Silver fell 0.2% to $36.31 an ounce, while platinum and palladium fell 1.6% and 0.5% to $1,274.50 and $1,060.44 an ounce, respectively. All three metals posted gains for the week.
