According to Kitco, the world gold price recorded at 9:30 a.m. on September 23, Vietnam time, was 3,743.63 USD/ounce. Today's gold price increased by 55.15 USD/ounce compared to yesterday. Converted according to the USD exchange rate at Vietcombank (26,448 VND/USD), the world gold price is about 119.7 million VND/tael (excluding taxes and fees). Thus, the gold bar price is 14.9 million VND/tael higher than the international gold price.
Since early morning, the crowd of people has been pouring into the gold shops. The price of 9999 SJC gold rings is 13 million VND/tael for the type of 1 tael or more, while the 5-cent type is listed at 13.1 million VND/tael. Many people bring tarps, folding chairs and even lunch boxes to wait, even eating quickly on the sidewalk while holding a spot for fear that their turn will run out or the price of gold will increase further.
Ms. Mai, 37 years old, in Gia Dinh ward, said that she patiently waited for hours to buy some gold bars for her sister but in the end had to give up: "After finishing the lunch box, the line was still not shorter, then hearing the security guard say there were no more gold bars, I had to take my chair and leave."
In the crowd, there were also many people from the suburbs, like Mr. Son (48 years old, old Nha Be district), who was there from 6am but was still behind hundreds of people and had to stand hundreds of meters away from the store because there was no place in the countryside to sell gold bars.
Besides the rush to queue up to buy gold, public opinion is also concerned about the information that personal income tax (PIT) will be applied to gold transactions. Some people think that this is not really reasonable.
Mr. Bao Khang said that he only buys in small quantities, at most for storage, so there should be no personal income tax on those who buy for personal use. Mr. Tam also expressed his hope that if it is applied, the State should calculate a reasonable level, avoiding causing difficulties for those who accumulate gold for a long time without trading in large quantities.
