On September 1, the Myanmar military announced that 370 Rohingya militants had been killed, 15 army soldiers and 14 civilians had also been killed in military operations in Rakhine state over the past week.
Meanwhile, the latest United Nations figures show that at least 38,000 Myanmar people, mainly the Rohingya ethnic minority, have fled to Bangladesh.
Currently, about 20,000 others are still stranded at the border between the two countries. Many of them are risking their lives by swimming across the Naf River, the natural border between the two countries, to Bangladesh.
On September 1, 18 bodies were found on the Bangladesh side of the river, bringing the total number of drowned people to 41.
Faced with that situation, yesterday (September 1), United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over reports of military activities by the Myanmar government in Rakhine state, and called on all parties to exercise restraint and reduce tensions to avoid a humanitarian disaster.
Violence erupted on August 25, when Muslim rebels from the Rohingya minority attacked dozens of police headquarters in Rakhine State. In response, government troops launched bloody raids in the area./.
