Two Chinese fighter jets approach US aircraft over the East Sea
Reuters quoted a US official as saying that two Chinese fighter jets approached a US spy plane over the East Sea on May 24 at a distance of less than 200 meters.
An anonymous source told Reuters that the US P-3 Orion surveillance aircraft was operating in international waters 240 km southeast of Hong Kong when the incident occurred.
The US official said the action was unsafe and a Chinese fighter jet flew over the P-3 Orion to limit its ability to maneuver. The Pentagon confirmed the action and called it "unsafe and unprofessional", Reuters added.

"We continue to review the incident and have conveyed our concerns to China through appropriate channels," said US Navy Commander and Pentagon spokesman Gary Ross.
Meanwhile, on May 24, the US warship USS Dewey sailed within 12 nautical miles of Vanh Khan Reef in Vietnam’s Truong Sa archipelago, which China is illegally occupying and reclaiming. This was the first patrol under the Donald Trump administration in the East Sea.
As the USS Dewey approached Mischief Reef, a Chinese warship appeared and demanded that the American warship leave the area. However, the crew of the USS Dewey continued on its journey.
