Addicted to gambling, former bank officer embezzled more than 4 billion VND and received sentence

(Baonghean.vn) - Formerly a bank officer with a passion for football betting, Nguyen Van Cuong embezzled 4 billion 70 million VND from his victims, then submitted a resignation letter and left the locality.

On May 23, the Provincial People's Court tried the case of "Abuse of trust to appropriate property" against Nguyen Van Cuong (born 1983), residing in Hung Nguyen town, Hung Nguyen district.

According to the indictment, Nguyen Van Cuong was formerly the Head of the Transaction Office of Dien Hong Commune, Dien Chau District, of the Northern Nghe An Branch of the Bank for Industry and Trade.

During the period from late 2014 to mid-2016, under the pretext of needing money to repossess a deed for a customer, Cuong borrowed money from 9 people, the least amount was 200 million VND from one person, the most amount was 800 million VND from another. To gain the trust of the creditors, each time he borrowed money, Cuong wrote a receipt and set a specific payment time. During this period, Cuong also paid back a part of the money he borrowed to these customers.

However, after borrowing the money, Cuong used it to gamble on football matches and for personal expenses. In August 2016, unable to repay the debt, Nguyen Van Cuong submitted a resignation letter and left the locality. The investigation agency determined that the amount of money Nguyen Van Cuong appropriated from the victims was 4 billion 70 million VND.

At the trial, Nguyen Van Cuong admitted his crime. Considering the case in its entirety, the panel sentenced Nguyen Van Cuong to 9 years in prison and ordered the defendant to compensate the victims nearly 4.3 billion VND (including principal and interest). In addition, Nguyen Van Cuong must pay more than 100 million VND in civil court fees./.
