South Korea pledges close coordination with US on inter-Korean talks
South Korea's Foreign Ministry said it will continue to coordinate closely with the United States while taking steps to resume dialogue with North Korea.
On January 2, the South Korean Foreign Ministry announced that the country will continue to coordinate closely with the United States while taking steps to resume dialogue with North Korea.
“While closely monitoring developments, including those related to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s New Year’s message, South Korea and the United States will continue to coordinate closely,” ministry spokesman Noh Kyu-duk said at a press briefing.
The official added that the two allies have long discussed all issues related to North Korea's nuclear development with the common goal of denuclearizing North Korea peacefully and through diplomatic means.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea plans to make various diplomatic efforts to pave the way for progress in the denuclearization of North Korea and improvement of inter-Korean relations by actively leveraging the momentum created by North Korea’s possible participation in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the possible holding of inter-Korean talks,” Noh said.
The above statements were made in the context that just before, South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon proposed that North Korea hold high-level dialogue early next week to discuss North Korea's participation in the global sports competition to be held in South Korea next month./.
