The march started at 11am (local time, or about 6pm Hanoi time) in the Park Lane area, passing Picadilly Theatre, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall Palace, towards the Houses of Parliament at 2:30pm (local time).

The marchers waved EU flags and carried placards with slogans such as “Never Give Up on the EU” and “March for Europe”. They chanted “What do we want?” and “Hello Europe” to the tune of the Beatles’ hit song “Hello Jude”.

Many of the marchers were young people - some wrapped in EU flags or painted with yellow stars on a blue background.

Organisers said 50,000 people took part in the march, while the Metropolitan Police estimated the number at around 30,000.

Comedian Mark Thomas, who was among the protesters, said British lawmakers should not back a vote to leave the European Union based on exaggerations and distortions about immigration and EU spending by anti-EU politicians.

"We would accept the result of the referendum if the politicians were giving accurate opinions, but they are full of misinformation," Thomas added.

A planned march in Trafalgar Square was postponed due to heavy rain, but tens of thousands of people were determined to return.

Although the final results showed that only 48.1% of the British people voted to remain in the EU, 60% of voters in the capital London strongly supported this option. However, the vote in London did not overwhelm the votes of voters in other areas.

The divisions within the UK over whether to leave or stay in the EU have led to 4 million people signing a petition for a second referendum, while also reviving the idea of separating Scotland from the UK.

One of the event’s organisers, Kieran MacDermott, wrote on Facebook: “We can stop the UK leaving the EU by not accepting the result of the referendum as the final word. Parliament must take a hard look at our democratic rights, they must call for another vote before accepting the UK’s exit.”
