As the harvest season draws to a close, despite a bumper crop, tens of tons of VietGAP-certified carrots, also a 3-star OCOP product, in Quynh Lien commune (Hoang Mai town) have seen their prices plummet by dozens of times compared to before Tet.

After the full moon of the first lunar month, farmers in Quynh Lien commune, Hoang Mai town, are still actively harvesting their VietGAP-certified vegetables. Carrots, radishes, chayote, scallions, kohlrabi... are among the vegetables and fruits grown year-round. In particular, fresh chayote and carrots have been grown according to VietGAP standards since 2017 and were recognized as OCOP 3-star certified in 2023. Photo: HT

The family of Mr. Ho Van Tinh in Hamlet 5, Quynh Lien Commune, planted 6 sao (approximately 0.6 hectares) of carrots this year. Mr. Tinh said that this year's carrot crop is abundant, yielding a high output of about 55 quintals/hectare. As of February 13, 2025, after more than 3 months of planting, Mr. Tinh's family had finished harvesting 4 sao, and 2 sao are still being harvested. However, since the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake, the price of carrots has dropped sharply, from 12,000 VND/kg to 500 VND/kg. Photo: HT

At this time of year, carrots have reached their "overripe" stage, so households in Quynh Lien commune are rushing to harvest them, hiring extra workers to pull them up and pack them in bags, waiting for traders to buy them. Photo: HT

Carrot growers say that because the carrots are past their harvest time and are "oversized" (about 2-3 carrots/kg), they are difficult to sell, as traders only buy carrots of average weight. Companies and supermarkets also only import carrots of uniform size, about 4-6 carrots/kg. Photo: HT

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Thuyet, a land and agriculture official at the People's Committee of Quynh Lien commune, five hamlets in the commune are primarily engaged in agriculture, growing seasonal vegetables and fruits. Of these, approximately 120 hectares are dedicated to carrot cultivation, yielding 50-60 tons per hectare. (Photo: HT)

Locals only select the best-looking tubers to sell to traders, discarding cracked or misshapen tubers and selling the rest for 100-200 VND/kg to deer farmers. The leaves are used as fertilizer and feed for buffalo and cattle. Photo: HT
