Millions of North Korean youth want to join the army to fight against America

North Korea announced today (September 28) that about 4.7 million students and workers have volunteered to join the army or re-enlist since leader Kim Jong-un vowed to retaliate against the United States.

Yonhap news agency reported that last weekend, Mr. Kim declared that he would take action at the "highest level" in response to US President Donald Trump's threats to "totally destroy" North Korea.

Over the past six days, millions of young North Koreans have expressed their willingness to join the army to fight the United States, with 1.22 million women even volunteering to follow, Rodong Sinmun, the mouthpiece of the Workers' Party of Korea, reported.

As tensions between North Korea and the United States escalate, Pyongyang regularly announces that its young people have volunteered to join the military in propaganda campaigns aimed at boosting internal unity.

Last month, North Korea issued a similar statement, condemning the United Nations Security Council for passing US-drafted resolutions to punish North Korea for its July intercontinental ballistic missile launches.

Tensions between the US and North Korea are escalating amid a war of words between the two countries' leaders. President Trump said he was ready to use military action with "devastating" force if necessary, after North Korea threatened to shoot down a US aircraft.

"A military strike is not a popular option. However, the United States is fully prepared to pursue this path if necessary," Mr. Trump said at a press conference in the Rose Garden of the White House.

"If we have to do it, we will do it," the US President asserted.
